Cannabidiol for epilepsy: a systematic review and meta-analysis.
To review the evidence of cannabidiol (CBD) as an antiepileptic agent. A systematic review and meta-analysis of RCTs was performed. MEDLINE, EMBASE and SCOPUS were searched up to April 2017. Randomized controlled trials that compared CBD and/or CBD-enriched compounds in any population of adults with epilepsy, regardless of comorbidities, had seizure frequency as the primary outcome and no limitations regarding primary outcome. The methodological quality of the studies was assessed using the Jadad scale. Thirteen studies were included in this review. The analysis of the two largest studies showed a trend toward greater efficacy of CBD in refractory epilepsy, compared to placebo (p = 0.09), but not when compared to other CBD-enriched compounds (p = 0.47). This systematic review and meta-analysis of RCTs shows that CBD shows a trend toward better seizure control in refractory epilepsy. CBD is generally well tolerated and safe for use.
